Unsupervised Jerry Jones left at home in charge of Cowboys' NFL draft

There was a thought when the NFL first decided on a virtual draft that the Cowboys would have an advantage. After all, the team is run by owner/GM Jerry Jones and his son Stephen, so some thought they’d be in the same room together.

But according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill, that’s not the case. Father and son will adhere to the same rules as everyone else; they’ll be in different houses.

That means Jerry is in charge of the Cowboys’ draft with no one to stop him.

Hmm.

“No, Jerry! You can’t draft Johnny Manziel. That was six years ago!”

You’ll remember that it was Stephen Jones acting as the voice of reason in 2014 when Jerry wanted to draft "Johnny Football" from Texas A&M. Instead, the Cowboys drafted four-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin.

“One of the things I’m not going to miss is when I came out of those draft rooms over the weekend, my old shins used to have big old bruises on them,” Jerry Jones said recently, via the Star-Telegram. “That was from Stephen kicking me under the table for three straight days relative to some of our decision-making. I think I’m going to kind of miss that physical punching that goes on as we’re conducting this draft.”

Can’t kick some one under the table from across town. Although, Stephen might try.

But really, according to Hill, the Cowboys make their picks as a team, consulting with Jerry, Stephen, scouting director Will McClay and now new head coach Mike McCarthy. Stephen Jones said there’s normally a consensus but Jerry is the tie-breaker when there isn’t.

Still, it’s kind of fun to envision a scenario in which Jerry just goes rogue tonight and pretends like his signal is dropping out on the Zoom conference with Stephen and the other decision-makers. And, really, that’s possible. Jones could do whatever he wants.

The Cowboys hold the 17th pick and Jerry being by himself might make the night a little more interesting.
