The Eagles are 6.5-point home underdogs against the Saints this weekend.
Here comes Hurts
NFL
Jalen Hurts will make his first-career start on Sunday at the age of 22 years and 128 days old. Hurts will become the second-youngest Eagles quarterback to start a game and the youngest since Jack Concannon in 1967.
This move felt pretty necessary after watching Carson Wentz struggle for 12 starts and then watching Hurts provide a spark for the offense against the Packers after he entered the game in the third quarter. This doesn’t mean Hurts is the future, it doesn’t mean that Wentz is cooked … but this was something that had to happen.
Of course, this is a tough situation for Hurts too. He’s going out there against the top defense in the NFL and a team that has given up an average of under 10 points per game in its last five games. Doug Pederson needs to call a game that helps the rookie.
Hello, old friend
Earlier this week, Malcolm Jenkins said he left the Eagles this offseason feeling undervalued and disrespected after the Birds didn’t give him a new contract and ultimately declined the option on his 2020 season.
On one hand, getting rid of a 32-year-old safety makes plenty of sense. On the other, the Eagles made some exceptions to their youth movement and if they were going to make just one it probably should have been Jenkins. At the very least, they should have had a better plan to replace him.
Jenkins has had some ups and downs this season but he’s an important piece on one of the NFL’s best defenses and one of the real Super Bowl contenders in the league.
Eye on the draft
If the 2020 season ended right now, the Eagles would have the No. 6 pick in the 2021 draft. The best chance for the Eagles (3-8-1) to get a better pick is to pass the No. 5 Chargers (3-9) or the No. 4 Cowboys (3-9) in the draft order.
There’s a real chance of that this week. Because the Eagles have to play the Saints and the Cowboys and Chargers have winnable games.
The Cowboys are in Cincinnati against the Bengals (2-9-1) and the Chargers are at home against the Falcons (4-8).
