Eagles surprisingly release one of their top backup offensive linemen

John Clark caught up with A.J. Brown at the airport after the WR landed in Philly following a blockbuster draft night trade.

The Eagles made a surprising move on Monday, agreeing to release backup offensive lineman Nate Herbig, according to NFL Network.

Herbig, 23, just signed his restricted free agent tender last week.

That meant he was scheduled to make $2.433 million in 2022, but instead he’ll hit the open market free agent.

Perhaps the Eagles’ pick of Cam Jurgens in the second round on Friday led to Herbig’s release. While Jurgens is listed as a center, the Eagles insist he has the versatility to also play guard. And if he can, then the Eagles didn’t want to pay Herbig nearly $2.5 million.

Herbig joined the Ealges as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2019. In his three years with the Eagles, Herbig has played in 33 games with 17 starts. In 2021, he played in 16 games with five starts at right guard. He played a total of 481 offensive snaps (46%).

Perhaps the Eagles could bring Herbig back at a lower salary if he can’t find a gig elsewhere.

But without Herbig the Eagles’ top backup offensive lineman are Jack Driscoll, Sua Opeta, Jurgens, Andre Dillard and Le'Raven Clark.
