Eagles waive Khalil Tate, open up roster spot as training camp approaches

The Eagles waived wide receiver Khalil Tate on Monday afternoon, opening up a spot on their 90-man roster.

As of Monday evening, the Eagles have 89 players. It’s unclear how the Eagles plan on using that vacant roster spot.

Tate, 21, played quarterback at Arizona and was certainly an intriguing undrafted prospect as he makes the switch to receiver. But it doesn’t look like there will be a Greg Ward story here. It’s unfortunate for Tate that in this unusual offseason he never even got a chance to suit up for the Eagles in practice.

Really, the ceiling for Tate during this training camp would have been to impress the Eagles enough to earn a practice squad spot as a developmental player. Now, he won’t even get that chance.

At Arizona, Tate was a true dual threat player, passing for 6,318 yards and rushing for another 2,285 during his four years with the Wildcats.

When the Eagles signed Tate they guaranteed him just $10,000 and didn’t give him a signing bonus. Those were the lowest totals among their whole UDFA class. Following the money is an easy way to track how much the Eagles like their undrafted players.

With Tate gone, the Eagles still have 13 wide receivers on their roster.
