Phillies opening day: Analyzing Phillies' odds entering season opener

Share

The Phillies are about to play a meaningful baseball game for the first time in nearly 10 months. Back in late June, we took a look at the early sportsbooks numbers when MLB announced the season would commence about a month later. The Phillies were listed at 20-1 to win the World Series on both DraftKings and FOX Bet.

Entering the season opener, the current odds have increased to 22-1 ($100 wager pays $2,200) on both books. The Phillies’ odds have stayed put on FanDuel at 25-1 ($100 wager pays $2,500), while on Caesars their number is up to 33-1 ($100 wager pays $3,300).

As for National League supremacy, the Phillies have 11-1 odds ($100 wager pays $1,100) to win the pennant on DraftKings. That number hasn’t changed since late June, while the same can be said of their odds to win the NL East. On William Hill, the Phillies remain the fourth choice to win the East at +330, trailing the Braves (+200), Nationals (+240) and Mets (+300).

There is one change that favors the Phillies when it comes to reaching the postseason for the first time since 2011. On PointsBet New Jersey, the Phillies have maintained an over/under win total of 31.5. However, the gap has closed a bit as the Braves’ number has dropped from 34.5 to 33.5, while as of Thursday, the Nationals had the biggest dip, going from 33.5 to 32. However, it was announced Thursday that star outfielder Juan Soto has been diagnosed with COVID-19, so the Nats' win total is not available at this time. The Mets did increase a game, moving from 31.5 to 32.5. A difference of two wins to capture the division crown for the Phillies by no means is an impossible task.

2020 NL East win totals (PointsBet New Jersey)

Braves
July 24: 33.5
June 25: 34.5

Mets
July 24: 32.5
June 25: 31.5

Nationals
July 24: N/A
June 25: 33.5

Phillies
July 24: 31.5
June 25: 31.5

Marlins
July 24: 24.5
June 25: 24.5

It’s important to note that PointsBet New Jersey was highlighted because it was one of the first area sportsbooks to post win totals in June. Most other sportsbooks currently had the Nationals listed at 33.5 wins before the Soto news became public. This situation is just another example of why bettors should always shop around and seek out value before placing bets.
