Phillies reinstate Haseley, make a roster move

The Phillies had to reinstate outfielder Adam Haseley from the restricted list by Saturday and did so, two months after he left the team for personal reasons.

Haseley was optioned to Triple A Lehigh Valley where he will get regular at-bats and try to play his way back to the majors. He’s back on the 40-man roster and the Phillies have little position player depth so it shouldn’t be too long.

The 25-year-old Haseley opened the year in a center field timeshare with Roman Quinn, who is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Odubel Herrera has taken over the everyday spot in center and hit .275/.344/.442, producing an OPS 19% better than the league average.

Haseley, picked eighth overall by the Phillies in the 2017 draft, has 355 plate appearances at the big-league level. He’s hit .264/.322/.373 with 20 doubles, five homers and 39 RBI. He’s been unable to seize a spot the way Herrera has over the past month, and both Joe Girardi and Gabe Kapler were hesitant to use Haseley against left-handed pitchers.

The Phillies also recalled right-handed pitcher Enyel De Los Santos from Triple A, optioning third catcher Rafael Marchan to Lehigh Valley. Marchan was called up two days ago when Chase Anderson went on the COVID injured list. He's had three separate stints so far this season with the Phillies, appearing in five games.
