The Phillies lost their leading hitter early in Tuesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
Jean Segura injured his right quadriceps running out a ground ball that ended the second inning. He was tended to by a team athletic trainer and quickly left the field.
The Phillies called the injury a right quadriceps strain and said Segura would have an MRI on Wednesday.

Losing Segura would be a blow. He entered Tuesday night as the team’s leading hitter at .345.
Segura isn’t the team’s only middle infielder who is hurting. Shortstop Didi Gregorius has not started two games in a row because of right elbow inflammation. Manager Joe Girardi said Gregorius had improved on Tuesday but Gregorius did not start.
Girardi had elevated Segura to the No. 2 hole in the batting order with Rhys Hoskins not in the starting lineup Tuesday.
Hoskins entered the game at first base after Segura’s injury and Brad Miller moved from first to second.
