Manager Joe Girardi and second baseman Jean Segura got into a verbal confrontation in the Phillies’ dugout early in Sunday’s loss to the Blue Jays.
Segura committed an error with one out in the first inning after the Jays opened with back-to-back homers and a single off of Chase Anderson. On the play, Segura tried to get too cute and missed the ball. His momentum was going toward first base and it appeared that he was hastily trying to begin a 4-3-6 double play with Guerrero barely off the bag at first.
Both runners were safe, though the Phillies got out of it unscathed when Rowdy Tellez grounded into a double play.

When Girardi came out to remove Anderson from the game an inning later, Segura did not go to the mound with the rest of the Phillies' infield. Shortly thereafter, the broadcast showed Segura yelling at Girardi in the dugout and being calmed down by third base coach Dusty Wathan.
It seemed to be a matter of Segura taking exception to criticism from his manager in front of teammates. After the game, Girardi had no interest in relaying the events and got a little testy with reporters.
On Saturday night, Girardi expressed frustration over his team’s lackluster defense after a three-error game.
“Catch the ball. Just catch the ball,” he said. “That’s all we need to do. I don’t know what that is. They work every day. They do their stuff. It has to be they’re just not following the ball in their glove, miscommunication. It shouldn’t happen at this level.”

Anderson gave up seven runs and recorded four outs. He has a 6.96 ERA in eight starts and may not be long for this rotation. He’s gotten through five innings just twice.
The Phillies quickly dug an 8-0 hole in another sloppy game before putting the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth inning of a 10-8 loss.
Brad Miller and Scott Kingery manned the outfield corners and both looked shaky going back on hard-hit balls to the warning track. Kingery injured himself banging into the wall in right and left the game with dizziness. It forced Bryce Harper, who did not start because of shoulder soreness, into the game in the bottom of the sixth. Harper did not look right in the field or at the plate, soft-tossing a ball in play back to the infield, squaring around to bunt throughout his first at-bat and striking out to end the game.
The Phils were also without J.T. Realmuto (left hand) and Didi Gregorius (right elbow). Backup catcher Andrew Knapp was scratched just before game-time with tightness in his side. Rafael Marchan caught and the Phillies began the game with no players available off the bench.
Rookie Nick Maton homered twice, the first two of his major-league career. He’s hit .316 through 82 plate appearances.
The Phillies are off Monday before beginning a six-game homestand against the Marlins and Red Sox.
